The RoHS Directive: what it is and who it affects
Directive 2011/65/EU, better known as RoHS II (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), concerns the restrictions on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).
This legislation limits the use of certain substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, the brominated compounds PBBs and PBDEs and certain phthalates) in the production of electrical and electronic equipment and their components, whose conformity must be demonstrated by affixing the CE marking.
Therefore, all companies that produce, assemble, distribute, or import EEE, to avoid incurring penalties or having their products withdrawn from the market, must comply with these obligations. The management of RoHS compliance is a very demanding issue for any company as it involves the collection of a significant amount of information on the substances contained in the EEE, a constant dialogue with suppliers, the involvement of every company function, and, in the most complex cases, the verification of product conformity through chemical analysis.
